Carlo Scaramella
Director and Country Representative - WFP Colombia
On 8 March 2019, the United Nations World Food Programme has welcomed its new Country Director and Representative, Carlo Scaramella.
Carlo Scaramella brings to this position some 25 years of experience working in development and humanitarian settings in Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America. Prior to moving to Colombia, Carlo served for several years as WFP’s Senior Deputy Regional Director for Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and Eastern Europe Region.
He started his UN career as a Humanitarian Adviser for the Office of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Sudan in 1991 and between 1995 and 1997, he was Programme Manager (humanitarian) of the UN Demobilization and Reintegration Programme in the context of the Angolan peace process. In Latin America he served as WFP Country Director and Representative in El Salvador, where he also established regional capacities for enhanced emergency preparedness and humanitarian response in Central America.
At Rome HQ, he led WFP’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Services for several years, and also served as WFP’s Global Coordinator for Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction.
Carlo Scaramella holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Naples (Italy).
