Máximo Torero

Chief Economist - FAO

Mr. Máximo Torero Cullen is the Chief Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). He joined the Organization in January 2019 as Assistant Director-General responsible for the Department of Economic and Social Development. Before joining FAO, he was Executive Director of the World Bank Group for Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay since November 2016 and previously headed the Markets, Trade and Institutions Division of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

His research work is mainly focused on the analysis of poverty and inequality, the importance of geography and assets (private or public) to explain poverty and policies aimed at poverty alleviation based on the function of infrastructure, institutions and how technological advances (or gaps) can help improve the well-being of households and small farmers. His experience spans Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia.

Mr. Torero, a Peruvian national, has a doctorate and a master’s degree in Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and a degree in Economics from the Universidad del Pacífico in Lima (Peru). He is a professor on leave of absence at the Universidad del Pacífico in Peru and an Alexander von Humboldt Researcher at the University of Bonn (Germany) and has published articles in relevant specialized journals (QJE, Econometric Theory, AER-Applied Microeconomics, RSTAT, Labor Economics and many others).

In 2000, Mr. Torero was awarded the Georg Foster Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He was awarded twice, in 2000 and 2002, with the Outstanding Research Award on Development, awarded by the Global Development Network, and was named a Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit of France in 2014.
